Places to Eat: Birmingham:

Having spent the last two-three years of my life living in Birmingham, and as the UK’s “Second City”, I thought it would be good to share some of the places I’ve found that are good to eat in. Obviously, this is all from my experience, so always approach any restaurant with the same care and caution that you would normally.

The Bristol Pear

The Bristol Pear is a pub in Selly Oak, and is part of a chain of pubs. They offer a variety of food, including breakfast which I have had many times. The food, drink and setting is lovely – although it does get very busy in the evenings if you don’t book. A charming pub, particularly if you’re in the university area.

The High Field

The High Field pub is part of the boutique hotel Highfield Town House, but you can eat in the pub even if you’re not staying in the hotel. I’ve had some lovely meals there with my family, and when I mentioned by allergy they were very good at advising me with which desserts in particular would be best for me. It is also well placed in the city, as it is within easy distance of the university and city centre.

I am a serious supporter of Zizi’s, because Mr Zizi himself has been so vocal in his support of allergic people, taking the stance that everyone should be able to enjoy eating out in safety. Their allergen menus are some of the best I’ve come across, and they are always so accommodating. Their food is also absolutely delicious, and I always feel safe when I eat there. The Zizi’s in Birmingham is in a particularly beautiful area called The Mailbox near the Jewellery Quarter in the city centre.

I have always loved Bills. The one at home in Brighton has always been my favourite, but the one in Birmingham is wonderful too. It is quite small, so make sure you book. Their allergen menus are always beautifully presented (they look like fancy menus rather than a book or a ring-binder folder), and I always choose Bills if I am looking for a staple, safe place to eat.

Pizza Express

Pizza Express is always one of my favourites. The one near me in Sussex will always be special (it is where I always had my birthday parties), but the one in Birmingham in the Bull Ring is good too. Similarly to Bills and Zizi’s, I feel comfortable in their restaurants and always find something delicious to eat.
